The group that oversees Canada’s dot-ca registry introduced a new privacy policy this week in an attempt to balance the rights of domain name registrants with those of trademark holders.
The Canadian Internet Registration Authority (CIRA) said that under the new policy, formally enacted on Tuesday, the personal information of individual domain name registrants, including registrant name, home address, phone number and e-mail address, would now automatically be protected. Corporate registrants will remain public.
Individuals, as opposed to businesses, own about 60 per cent of all of the dot-ca domain names in Canada. The personal information of these owners was previously available through an internet search called Whois (pronounced who-is).
The new privacy rules restricts how private-sector organizations collect, use and disclose personal information in the course of commercial business; this would put it in line with the 2004 Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA)

Russian President called for Russia to be assigned an Internet domain name in the Cyrillic script on Wednesday as part of a Kremlin drive to promote Russian as a global language. Russian, once the main language throughout the Soviet Union, is losing ground to local languages and also to the English language. Defending Russian is a matter of national pride.

It was announced that one of the leading online retailers of licened NASCARD and character jackets, shirts, and other merchandise would be changing their name after pressure from NASCAR attorneys and licenses. “NASCAR contacting us came as a complete surprise,” said company president Brian Palosi, “since we found many other websites were using “NASCAR” in their domain name.”

Facebook has won ownership of the the Facebook.com.au domain name. They were awarded the domain from Australian company Callverse Pty Ltd. The domain name currently had a page that advertises a “click to call service” that is “coming soon”.
The decision, handed down by a three person panel at World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), has not been posted online yet so details of the dispute are not available. Domain Name Wire will post details once they are available.
